Air - Live at the Fox Theater in Oakland, CA 03.26.10

On Friday evening my girl and I went to see Air, a french band quite possibly most famous for their soundtrack to the Sofia Coppola movie "The Virgin Suicides," or the catchy tune "Alpha Beta Gaga." No matter, if you're not already familiar with this duo go out and purchase all of their albums.
Below is some video footage of the live show at the Fox Theater in Oakland. I was initially right up front, but I moved back a bit halfway through the show because I was shut down from filming before the end of the opening song as you may notice in the first video.

What?!?!

Usually I'm the only person adding to the view count on this blog. But to my surprise today the count had gone from 80 something to over 20k 200k hits.

What the hell is going on here?!?! Why all of the hits all of a sudden? It's not like this is spectacular writing (not even close).

Oh well, if this keeps up I suppose the pressure is on to update a little more often.

**Update**
I'm going to go ahead and guess that this is a result of the Dave Attell at Cobb's Comedy Club, and Dave Chappelle at The New Parish recordings. I Googled both terms and noticed that this blog comes in some of the earlier results.
Stay tuned as in the future I plan to post other events of interest that I may be attending, hopefully with video footage included.

Ahhh, another magnificent day in the city of San Francisco!
The weather has been getting progressively nicer over the last several days and it looks as if the trend will be continuing into the weekend allowing me to debauch outside in complete comfort.

One thing that's come along with this weather that I don't recall happening before is that I appear to have developed some kind of allergies to something in the area. I suspect that it has something to do with those droopy willowish looking trees that are lining every street in the Lower Haight.
I also think that these trees may be the culprit that leave an impossible to remove dusting on my car.

After a quick googling of SF trees I believe the trees I'm referring to are the Maytenus boaria aka the Mayten.

Dave Chappelle's Come Back @ The New Parish

Sorry, it's been almost a month since my last post. Things have kind of picked up in my day to day activities, and I was focusing my writing efforts into an open call for a feature length comedy treatment.

That being said, I don't even recall all of the things I've done or thought between the last time I blogged and now.

One of the more notable things was that I got the chance to Dave Chappelle perform twice in one week at The New Parish in Oakland. I accidentally bought tickets to both the Thursday 2/11 (early set) and Saturday 2/13 (late set) shows and was unable to get a refund for one of the nights so I went to both.
Despite all of the hyped up ban on recording devices I was still able to slip a small HD cam into both shows. Now because I was more interested in enjoying myself and trying not to draw attention to my illegal camera the resulting footage was pretty worthless. The only portion of either recording which might be worthwhile is the audio of which I got around an hour of each set.

I'm going to attempt to upload it to this blog a little later, but I'm not certain I'll even be able to, stay tuned...

Let's see, what else? I went to the Valentine's Day Pillow Fight at Justin Herman Plaza, and coincidentally on the way there passed Dave Chappelle and his kids outside of the Four Seasons hotel. What a stalker-ish weekend that turned out to be.

Lots of other crap happened over the last few weeks but I don't feel like trying to remember and record it all for you now. It's probably not that interesting to you anyway.

Weekend.

Gallery openings at Skullz Press, and Fifty24SF
Friday night a couple of friends of mine checked out the gallery openings at Skullz Press and Fifty24SF. We intended to check out Gallery 16 too, but time did not permit us, as we chose to pre-booze our faces before we journeyed onward into the night.
First up was Skullz Press. This was my first time at this gallery, although I've been a fan of Mike Giant's work for some time. The atmosphere was exactly how I like it, dimly lit and crowded with a bunch of boozed up mutants. Ok, so they weren't mutants. In fact they were the type of folks you'd expect at such an event, the old cliched SF hipster, but that's quite alright. Giant's art was great and I noticed a sign on the wall that proclaimed "all posters $40," however I learned that only some of the posters were actually for sale, and not the one that I had my eye on.
I picked up a one of the prints to hang on my wall and VERY briefly chatted up Mike Giant who you can imagine was being accosted every ten seconds by another enthusiast. Anyhow I learned that this would be the last Skullz Press opening at the Divisadero location, as Mike will eventually be relocating his gallery elsewhere in the city.
After Skullz Press we headed back down the hill to see if we could finally get past the large crowd that had materialized outside of Fifty24SF Gallery. It was close to 10pm and there were still quite a few people there, but we managed to squeeze in before they closed for the night. As forecast the show was tremendous. Choe's work is even better in person, and much larger than I had imagined. I was really hoping to get a chance to briefly meet Choe and show him a small unusual painting of his that I acquired a couple years back by chance. Unfortunately at this point in the night he had already taken off. So as we were standing around outside trying to figure out where to go next I noticed a man that resembled pictures I'd seen of David Choe so I approached him and awkwardly asked if he was "the man." Much to my embarrassment it was not David Choe, but instead his brother, I think his name was Jimmy. Oh well, on to Toronado for some beverage.
If you get a chance both of these shows are worth checking out. I also imagine the Maya Hayuk show at Gallery 16 is worthwhile too, but I haven't made it there yet so I'm unable to give you a first-hand report.

Saturday
I spent most of the morning and afternoon as a tourist walking around North Beach, China Town, and Fisherman's Wharf. My girlfriend and friend Bob were both interested in getting some Chinese food, but I have almost nothing but bad experiences with the local cuisine so I was very skeptical on selecting a place to eat. The streets were crowded as usual (or more-so). The annual Chinese New Year festival is going on throughout the month so the streets were blocked off and there were quite a few vendors with nothing of interest to me.
I eventually got a calzone in North Beach and some delicious brew at Cafe Trieste, followed up by several hours of tooling around the wharves and antique arcade.

Sunday
We took a scenic drive around Marin county and ended up at Target, where my girlfriend had been savagely trying to get me to take her to for many months now. No spectacular deals were found.
Later that evening while laying around the house procrastinating a visit to the gym we heard a quite a few police/fire sirens passing by (more than the usual amount). Little did we know, just up the street a 22 Fillmore MUNI bus had struck and severed a fire hydrant at the corner of Haight and Fillmore. Somehow we didn't hear the gallons upon gallons of water shooting into the air a block up the street, so we missed the entire spectacle; but luckily in this day age Youtube was able to provide me with eyewitness accounts of the event. Wow!

bits o tid

Sandwiched between a tweaking meth-head, an exceedingly polite ex-con (I've seen him on the route before), and the right side doors of a crowded inbound N train this morning. Both fellows exit at the Civic Center station. Maybe it's part of a mandatory parole NA meeting. I wonder if they are together, or if it's coincidental. They both have similar tattoos.

My mother left a message on my voice mail yesterday to inform me that she had heard on the news that Al Qeada was intent on large scale attacks in major US cities within the next six months and advised me to be weary of weirdos. If I were to avoid activities because a "weirdo" was in close proximity I would never leave the house.

I began reading screen plays to gather an idea of what makes a good one. So far I've read The Big Lebowski and American Psycho. I realize feature length scripts are much shorter than I had previously assumed. My scriptwriting course in college taught me very little. What to read next?

I've had a lot of drainage occurring over the last couple of weeks. I kept expecting that it would clear up after a day or two, but it's still going strong. Does it have anything to do with smoking cessation? Only time will tell.
